5 things on Friday...

Several of the blogs that I read post 5 random things on Friday...I thought that was a great way to share the little things that I've been slacking about posting on all summer!

1. I found this fantastic chevron-trimmed wall calendar at Target, just in time to record all of this year's important dates!  This is going to be the jumping-off point for a little command center wall in our laundry room.

2.  After pinning kitchen ideas, I finally added some glass canisters for flour and sugar to my counters.  I added some sweet antique tea cups as scoops after seeing it on Pinterest.  I love the pop of green it adds to that side of our kitchen!

3. Ya'll, I have a confession to make.  I love Gain detergent and dryer sheets.  I have tried lots and lots of the cheaper store brand detergents, but nothing makes our laundry smell as good as Gain!

4. I painted Grayson's old high chair (that was actually a hand-me-down from my nephews) a few months ago, but needed some kind of cushion for Miss Mollie Kate's behind to sit on.  I finally got my act together this week and whipped up a little top and bottom cushion with some laminated fabric (from Hobby Lobby), a few layers of quilt batting, and some bias tape.

5. I cannot get over the cuteness of these little moccasins I bought for MK at the Old Navy outlet last weekend.  Are they not the cutest shoes you have ever seen?

{MOPS craft}: blessing bags...

Are you part of a MOPS group?  Or have you been in the past?  It stands for "Mothers of Preschoolers" and has been one of my favorite things that I've been a part of since becoming a mom.  We meet every other week for breakfast (without kiddos!), a speaker of some sort, and a craft.  The "craft part" is what I'm responsible for.  We typically make some sort of craft that can be made quickly and on the cheap - since we have over 50 moms in attendance!

This past week we made Blessing Bags.

Blessing Bags are kits that you put in a plastic zip-top bag to keep in your and hand out when you come across someone in need.  Here's what we put in our Blessing Bags:

1. Bottle of water
2. Washcloth
3. Toothbrush
4. Applesauce
5. Cheese and crackers
6. Shampoo
7. Peanut butter crackers
8. Toothpaste
9. Band-aids
10. Granola bar

I bought all of the supplies to make between 40 and 50 bags for a little over $90!  We have also put these together with our college students and asked everyone to bring an item for the bags.  Either way, it doesn't have to cost a lot of money...but it can make a big difference in someone's day!

printing instagram photos: printicular

I was a little late to the Instagram bandwagon but I LOVE it (follow me on Instagram here)!  I am finding that it's a little more "friendly" than Facebook and come on, there are pretty pictures to look at! Ha!

I was looking for a way to print some Instagram photos for a project that I'm working on (to be posted soon!) and came across the Printicular app.  Y'all, this app is fantastic!

It's a free download from the App store that allows you to print Instagram photos directly from your photo to Walgreens...and they're ready in an hour!  Each photo is $0.39 which is just a little higher than your regular print price, but the photos are printed on 4x4 photo paper sheets.

You simply download the app and open it up.  Your screen will look like this.

Choose your Instagram account  and select the photos you'd like printed.

Click "Print to Walgreens" and follow the steps for selecting your store, etc.  That's it! Wait an hour and pick up your awesome Instagram photos.

By the way, Walgreens and Printicular have no idea who I am...I just wanted to share something that works for me!

Do you print your Instagram photos?  What website or app do you use?

Downton obsessed...

How many of you are as into Downton Abbey as I am?  I have to admit that I was totally late to the game, but started watching Season 1 while Scott was out of town for a week in January and literally could not stop watching!

I am eagerly awaiting Season 4 (I heard it's not airing in the US until January 2014?!  Come on, PBS!) and eating up the hilarious Downton pins on Pinterest.  I came across these 7 Beauty Lessons Learned from Downton Abbey on Daily Glow and had to share!

warm apple cider...

I am popping in quickly to share with you what my house smells like...warm apple cider!  Not the kind that you drink (although it smells just like it!).  This kind...

Warm Apple Cider scented wax cubes from the Better Homes and Gardens line at Walmart!   My warmer is also from the BH&G line at Walmart.  It was a Christmas gift from Scott and Grayson last year and I love it!  The wax melts usually run about $2, but you can often find them on clearance at the end of the season for $1!

Do you have a favorite candle that doesn't have a wax cube companion?  Vanessa over at this & that shares how to make your own wax cubes!

**By the way, Walmart has no earthly idea who I am...just like to pass along my favorite things!**

luckett’s and miss mustard seed…

While on our vacation in Virginia, my mom and I carved out some time to visit one of my favorite stores…Luckett’s!  The weather was beautiful and the rooms were loaded with great treasures.

I loved this giant metal file cabinet/library card catalog…but the thing that I was most looking forward to seeing was the booth of the fabulous Miss Mustard Seed herself!

a summer Scripture printable…

 romans 15_13

*I shared this printable over at Worthy of the Prize on Monday, but wanted to post it here, too.
I don’t know about your summer, but ours is CRAZY!  My youth pastor husband will be out of the country for 10 days, at different camps for 2 weeks, and helping to oversee 300 teenagers who will be staying at our church (while I’ll be helping to man the kitchen to feed all of those hungry students).  Whew!  It makes me tired just thinking about it, but it’s going to be great…especially since one of those camps is at the BEACH!  Woohoo!   One of the great things about his job is that Grayson and I get to tag along on most of those adventures.
Anyway, when I came across this verse on Sunday I thought it was a perfect verse to print out for the summer.  Just to remind me that we can be filled with JOY and PEACE so that we can overflow with HOPE.  What a promise we have!
To print this out for yourself, simply right-click on the photo and save it to your computer.  Print it out at home or send it to your favorite photo processing shop!

things I love…my Shark Steam Mop

This is what blogging has done to me, y’all…as I was using my steam mop this morning I thought, “Oh, I so need to do a post on my love for this mop.”  Let me say that the lovely people at Shark have no earthly idea who I am or that I’m posting this…I just wanted to share something that I love (much like these awesome candles).

One of my favorite things in our house is the laminate flooring that covers almost all of our open spaces – the laundry room, kitchen, living room, entry way, and hallway.  It’s a beautiful, wide-planked, dark reddish-brown floor that has a hand-scraped look.  My husband actually chose this color and I conceded.  I wanted a different color (I can’t even remember which one) but am SO glad that we went with his choice.  The only downside to the floors?  Cleaning them without showing streaks.  Until I used this Shark Steam mop.  It cleans them PERFECTLY and without streaks!

My mom bought me this steam mop for my birthday, when it was on super sale at Target during their Black Friday sale.  I know I’m old when I start asking for cleaning products for my birthday.  Ha!  It normally runs about $79 which is definitely worth it, in my opinion.  You don’t need any cleaners, just water, and the cleaning pads are washable.  So much better than the disgusting heavy mop and bucket.

Do you have any favorite cleaning products? Do you have Shark Steam mop?  Love it or hate it?

the best sugar cookie recipe ever…

best_sugar_cookie_recipe_ever
Pin It

After trying several sugar cookie recipes, I am convinced that I have found the best sugar cookie recipe ever!  They’re not too sweet, roll out PERFECTLY (because of a little trick), keep their shape very well, and aren’t too chewy or too crisp.  Sounds good, right?  They do have a very interesting ingredient for sugar cookies, a half cup of sour cream.  I don’t know what it does to the cookies but it works!

I also always use a glaze icing for these cookies.  It’s a super easy recipe that pipes and floods well.  I think it’s tastier than royal icing and dries with a nice shine, as opposed to the matte finish of royal icing.
Here are the recipes for you:

Vanilla Butter Sugar Cookies

1 cup unsalted butter, softened
1 1/2 cups white sugar
1 egg
1/2 cup sour cream
*Use regular sour cream, not reduced fat!
1 Tablespoon vanilla extract
4 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt

Directions:

Cut butter into cubes and cream together with sugar until light in color.  Add egg and mix well. Add sour cream and vanilla and mix well.  Mix the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt in a separate bowl.  Add half of the flour mixture and mix well.  Add the remaining flour mixture and mix well.

Divide the dough into fourths and scoop onto wax paper.  Make 4 individual packets of dough and wrap up.  Place in fridge for 30 minutes to chill.

Preheat oven to 375 degrees.

Open 1 packet of dough and place another piece of waxed paper on top.  Roll out dough between the waxed paper.  This makes it SO much easier to roll and prevents having to flour your surface and rolling pin.  Way less mess to clean up! I usually roll these cookies to about 1/4 of an inch thick.  Be sure to keep your packets of dough in the fridge until you’re ready to roll them out.

Cut out cookies and place in freezer for 10 minutes.  This step is important because it prevents the cookies from spreading in the oven – it helps them hold their shape well.

Remove cookies from freezer and place on parchment paper lined cookie sheets.

Bake for 7-10 minutes until the edges of the cookies look very slightly brown.  Cool completely on counter or wire rack.

*The dough (in an air-tight container) will keep for 2 days in the fridge or in the freezer for a few weeks.

Glaze Icing

2 lbs. powdered sugar
1/2 cup water
1/4 light corn syrup
1 Tablespoon clear vanilla
*I use regular vanilla, but use clear if you’re wanting a white icing

Directions:

Mix all ingredients together on low speed  for 3 – 4 minutes using a paddle attachment.  Depending on how thick or thin you’d like your icing, you might need to add water.  Just add it A LITTLE at a time!  Once your icing is mixed, separate into bowls and add the desired coloring.

I usually ice these the day before I want to package them up and leave them out on the counter to set up.

Do you have a favorite sugar cookie recipe?  Try these and let me know how it compares!

ETA:  I wrapped these up in cute little cupcake boxes (found at good, ol' Walmart!!) for Grayson's preschool teachers.  Here is my instagram picture of how they turned out...I LOVE that sweet 4-year-old signature. :)

P.S. I love to answer your questions in the comments but can't reply if you're a no-reply blogger!  Cassie over at Hi Sugarplum! has a great tutorial on how to fix this bloggy problem!

a little fall secret...

I'm going to let you all in on a little secret...if you want to buy one of the best (and cheapest) fall candles, run out to Wal-mart and buy this Mulled Cider candle!  This size has 3 wicks and will set you back a whopping $3.25, but will make your entire house smell like fall.  I know that "cheap" candles usually don't put out enough scent but this one smells delicious.

And no, Mr. Walton is not paying me to suggest this...but if Wal-mart wants to pay me, pay me in Mulled Cider candles!   These sell out fast and if they don't sell out, they often pull them in the next few weeks to put out their Christmas scents, so you'll want to buy some today.  I burned the Mulled Cider candle from September through February last year and loved every minute of it.

What is your favorite fall-scented candle?

{one of my favorite things}: one line a day journal

I have a confession. I've never been good at keeping a journal. I love the idea of journaling, I love journals, I love pens...but I'm not great at putting it all together.  Until I found this...

The One Line a Day journal.  I can handle one line!

The coolest thing about this journal is that there is one page for every day of the year.  On the page, you'll find five spaces to record a line about that certain day for five years.  Not only does this little journal give you a small place to write your thoughts, it gives you a chance to reflect on the past years!  I so wish I had found this journal before Grayson was born.  I'd love to go back and read about what he was doing on that exact day the year before and the year before that.

I keep mine on my nightstand, with one of my favorite pens, and mainly use it to write down funny things that Grayson says or "milestones" that he has.  I'm sure I'll record more of my thoughts instead of his actions as he gets older.

How do you record your thoughts or your child's milestones?  Do you keep a journal?

**Don't forget to enter the 100 followers giveaway!  The winner will be announced next Monday!**
