white appliances: yay or nay?

When we remodeled our kitchen 2 years ago, we decided on a black stove to match the black refrigerator (that we already had) and the black dishwasher that was already in the kitchen.  You can see a tiny bit of the dishwasher on the right side of the sink in this photo.

That dishwasher has become my nemesis over the last two years.  I never really felt like the dishes were clean when they came out of the dishwasher.  Scott and I talked about getting a new dishwasher for months, but had a million other things going on (like having a new baby) and kept putting it off.  The whole time I was dreaming of a new dishwasher and started to see white dishwashers in white kitchens popping up on Pinterest.

Even Miss Mustard Seed has a white dishwasher in her FABULOUS kitchen!

I love how the white dishwashers seem to blend in with the cabinets instead of breaking up the line of white with a black or stainless appliance.

Well, my nemesis finally bit the dust last week!  I was so excited to go appliance shopping.

A little side note, if buying a new dishwasher is the highlight of your work, you might be getting old. ;)

A local appliance store was having a fantastic sale and we walked out with a dishwasher in less than 30 minutes.  If you follow me on Instagram, you saw this peek of our new dishwasher.

I'm working on another post with an updated picture of our kitchen.  Until then, I'll be enjoying the QUIET dishwasher and SUPER CLEAN dishes.

mk's dresser...after

Back in August, I showed you the "before" of MK's dresser.  It was HIDEOUS shape to start with, but had a beautiful shape.

In September, I tried out Annie Sloan's Duck Egg chalk paint and loved the ease that the paint went on with and loved the color...I just didn't love the color against the gray walls of the nursery.

Anxious to save some money and try out some of the DIY chalk paint recipes floating around Pinterest, I set out to paint the dresser in a different color.  I chose Sweet Nothing by Behr, a gorgeous, barely-there pink color.

I came across this recipe from Dear Emmeline and picked it...simply because I already had the ingredients at home! :)    You can pick up a sample pot of paint from Home Depot for $2.94 (exactly 1 cup of flat paint) and a box of baking soda for less than $1!  I am thrilled with the results, for less than $4 - less than half of the price of AS chalk paint.

The dresser was missing a few of the drawer pulls so I simply threaded ribbon through the holes for a few months until I found what I was looking for. On a weekly trip to Home Depot I came across these pulls (they were originally brass) that look simply sweet on the dresser with a coat of white spray paint.

I would definitely recommend this DIY chalk paint recipe and will continue to use it myself!  It has held up remarkably well (I finished it with a coat of Minwax paste wax) over the near-constant use of the dresser/changing table.

Another peek of the dresser from the door to MK's room...it turned out exactly as I pictured!

instagram tour: mollie kate's nursery

Our sweet Mollie Kate is set to arrive any day...so I thought I'd share a few details of her nursery via our favorite little square instagram photos.

Yep, I changed the color of the dresser....the Annie Sloan Duck Egg chalk paint made the gray walls look a little too blue for my taste.  So, I DIYed my own chalk paint in Behr's Sweet Nothings.  I'll be back with more details about that soon!

A banner made using linen-like fabric and vintage sheets...

The updated Jenny Lind crib where she will lay her sweet head and (hopefully) sleep through the night at 8 weeks! :)

Pink and white gingham curtains that I made for a STEAL!  4 lined panels (90-inches long) for less than $30!

A DIY crib mobile made using an embroidery hoop and vintage sheets...

Mollie's monogram, courtesy of the Fine Line Market...you'll be hearing more about this SOON!

A DIY ruffled crib skirt made with a vintage pink sheet ($1.90 from the thrift store) and trimmed with another vintage sheet!  I will be back with a post about this crib skirt.  I used a BRILLIANT tutorial that I found on another blog...

So there are the little details...I will post more pictures of the nursery in the coming days/weeks!

fall front porch

I am still chipping away at projects in the nursery - nothing like waiting until the last 5 1/2 (or less!) weeks!  I will be back in the next week or two to show you a few of those projects.  Until then, I wanted to show you our fall front porch.  A friend made the wreath for me a few years ago and I added the little Autumn Blessings sign to the middle this year.  I also picked up a new door mat at Target for a little over $10.  Isn't it funny how a $10 door mat can spruce things up?

laundry basket dresser...

I love Ana White and her fabulous blog!  I have had this laundry basket dresser pinned since the first time I saw it...which was probably before Pinterest was around! :)   The laundry basket dresser seemed so practical and an actual piece of "furniture" in the laundry room.  We started out with one of those fabric laundry sorters, which did it's job, but it was difficult to reach down into all of the fabric bags to get the laundry out.

So, when my parents were here visiting a few months ago, I asked my dad to build me my very own laundry basket dresser to fit the space perfectly.  He actually just looked at a picture and created his own version, but it's similar to the plans that Ana White shares.

My new laundry basket dresser has an open back, to let it "breathe" (according to my dad) and open sides. The dimensions are a little different in order to fit our space perfectly, but it still uses the Sterlite laundry baskets that the other dressers use.

I plan to find a galvanized bucket to sit on top to corral my cleaning supplies and to keep other stuff from piling up there!  I'm also going to add some type of labels to the laundry baskets to separate them - maybe some cute chalkboard labels??

Our laundry room has come a LONG way since we moved in nearly two years ago. Here's an updated look at our laundry room with the laundry basket dresser.  I'm in love!

Have you updated any room in your home lately with a little project?  A big thanks to my dad for helping me cross some projects off of my ever-growing "to do" list!

i love jenny lind….

Well, I don’t really know Jenny Lind…but I love Jenny Lind style cribs and beds!  I have always loved the vintage-look of those sweet spindles (apparently other people do, too!  Check out this post by Apartment Therapy) and knew I’d have one some day.

When Grayson was just a few months old, I started seeing pictures of painted Jenny Lind beds used in boys’ rooms…I was sold!  I had visions of a red painted bed with navy and white bedding.

I stumbled upon a practically perfect, chippy painted, antique one at a garage sale in Austin for just $5 (including the headboard, footboard, and metal rails!) and threw my money at quickly paid the nice family.  It sat in our garage for 2 years, moved with us to Missouri, and eventually became our guest bed.  I'm so glad that I never painted it!

**This is not our bed…but it looks very similar!**

Now that we’ve flipped rooms and are combining the nursery with the guest room, the Jenny Lind bed has taken up residence there.  I have been secretly dreaming of selling Grayson’s old white crib and buying a Jenny Lind crib to match.  Just take a look at some of my “pins” to see how sweet this crib looks in a nursery!

I love this sweet, white crib with beautiful bedding...

The yellow crib pops off of these turquoise walls!  I love all of the fabric used in this nursery...especially that crib skirt.

Another great white crib with beautiful bedding...and check out those tissue paper poms and paper lanterns!  Love!

Erica, of Urban Grace Interiors, had the crib she used as a child repainted in a gorgeous gold!

I decided to try my hand at Craig's List to see if I could find a reasonably priced Jenny Lind crib...I'll be back tomorrow to show you what I found!

what I’m working on…

Our little guy is spending a few days in Texas with his grandparents, so I’m working on my “to do” list!

One thing is making over this desk…

desk

With the addition of a little girl to our family, there’s a bit of room-switching going on…which means that I’m losing my sewing room!  But I’m not worried, because with a little creativity and moving around, it’ll be great!  The desk (a Craig’s List find for $20!!) has had a little spray paint and caster remodel and is ready to serve as my new sewing desk. It’ll be paired with one of these to make a mobile sewing cart/center!

raskog

I really wanted the turquoise version, but Ikea was out of stock when my sister went on her shopping trip for me! Most of my fabric and other supplies are going to be housed in half of the walk-in closet in what’s now the guest room/nursery.

I’ll update in the next few days and give you some sneak peeks along the way!

12 in 12...february's project

February's 12 in 12 project is spicing up our guest bathroom, which also serves as Grayson's bathroom.    Here is what it looks like in all it's tan, white, and striped glory...

The view from the hallway.

I love these letter hooks that I found on clearance at Hobby Lobby last year.

Not sure what happened to the hand towel...I'm guessing Grayson used it to dry off something (probably one of his little horses or "skateboard guys") he was washing in the sink.  Just keeping it real, folks!

This is definitely not going to be a remodel at all...we just need to add some pops of color and spice it up a little!  I'll be back tomorrow to share some of my ideas and inspiration!

Have you done a little "spicing up" in one of your rooms lately?  Pinned any great kid bathrooms that are still "guest friendly"?  Do share!

12 in 12...january's reveal!

My 12 in 12 project for January was to tackle the playroom and I'm excited to reveal the shelves that my husband and I built!

We used my inspiration shelves as a jumping off point and built these to fit the play room and fit our needs. The shelves are made out of 1 x 12 pine (be careful when you're buying wood because the wood doesn't actually measure 12 inches wide!) which we had cut to size at Lowe's and screwed together with wood screws.  We used cleats to hold the shelves in place, which are just 1x2s cut to size and screwed into the sides.  The shelves are then attached to the top of the cleat.

After all of the construction was complete, I sanded everything down and filled the knots, holes, and imperfections with wood fillers.  The edges were all caulked and then I painted 4, yes FOUR, coats of white semi-gloss paint.  I just used Valspar's white semi-gloss paint off of the shelf and loved it!

We attached 2 more 1x2s to the back of the shelf and screwed that into the studs to secure the book shelf to the wall.  It's not going anywhere!

I added the green baskets (from the Dollar Tree) that were on the previous shelves in the playroom, along with the new bins that I bought at IKEA.  I'd like to get 2 more of the white bins to put along the bottom shelf and 3 more green baskets to fill in the middle shelves.

I have a few more projects up my sleeve to "decorate" it a little more, including adding a few more frames to the wall for Grayson's art. The 4 frames are just leaning for now but will get hung back up in the near future.

I think that Scott and I did a pretty good job for it being the first piece of furniture we have built together!  If you have any questions about specifics on the book shelves, feel free to leave a comment!

I will be back tomorrow with February's 12 in 12 project!

Have you ever built a piece of furniture with your husband or by yourself?  What are your secrets?

laundry room command center...

Don't we all love those command centers (called "Daily Systems" by PB) that keep popping up in the Pottery Barn catalogs and all over blogland?  I have been staring at this blank wall in our laundry room for months now and finally figured out what to use it for...a command center!

I wanted a dry erase calendar as part of the command center but needed a BIG one.  I saw a coupon floating around the internet for a free 16x20 poster print at Wal-mart and thought that would be the perfect thing to use for my calendar.  Here's the calendar that I designed:

I printed out it out for FREE, bought a $11 frame (although these are easily found at garage sales - I just wanted my project done that night!) and popped the calendar in the frame.  Now I have dry erase calendar that works perfectly for our family.

If you'd like your own 16x20 calendar, leave me a comment and I'll e-mail you a digital copy!  You can print your own for free at Wal-mart - be sure to call your photo center first to make sure they accept the coupon!

I'll be sharing the rest of the "mini makeover" in our laundry room over the next few days!  If you'd like to see some of my inspiration, check out my Laundry Rooms board on Pinterest.

curtains for the boy's room...

On a whim, we recently moved our little guy's toddler bed out of his room and the queen-sized bed from our guest room in.  Grayson suddenly had a "big boy room" that needed to be a little more pulled together.  Thank goodness for Pinterest!!

I have an entire board on Pinterest devoted to ideas for my little boy's room.   I wanted his room to be red, white, and blue and have some baseball elements, but with a vintage, pulled-together-over-time look.  Got all that?  Ha! :)

I bought a navy blue quilt and shams set at Target, had a friend come over and help rearrange the furniture and "art" on the walls, and called it a day.  One of the things that was on the "to do" list was to make some curtains.  Curtains seem to make a room look instantly pulled together and can usually be done inexpensively!   These are the curtains that I kept coming back to and planned to make some similar to this but with red stripes...

Source: girlintheredshoes.com via Mary Jo on Pinterest

Fast forward a few weeks and our sweet boy decided that his napping days were over and he began waking up at 6:30am instead of his usual 7-7:30am.  My husband said "Do you think curtains would help?"  The question wasn't even out of his mouth before I started planning the curtains.

I nixed the off-white with red stripes idea in favor of red curtains with white stripes...here's what I came up with:

I came across some twin-sized red flat sheets at Wal-mart for $5 and thought they would be perfect.   I bought 2 red flat sheets (I cut one sheet in half to make 2 panels, so one sheet for each window) and 1 white sheet (for the stripes). If I weren't so cheap needed wider curtains I would have bought the full-sized flat sheets for $10.

I apologize for not taking pictures of the steps...I was too nervous about how they would turn out.  So, I'm going to do my best to explain the steps.  If you have any questions, send me an email!  I'd be happy to answer them!  If you're not interested in the "how to", feel free to skip down to the bottom of the post to check out the rest of the pictures!

While the sheets were in the washing machine/dryer, I tried to plan out the size of my stripes.  The sizes I ended up using were 6 inches at the top, 3 inches in the middle, and 2 inches at the bottom.  The white sheet was a little too thin for my liking, so I decided to use a double thickness for each stripe.  So for each stripe, I double the measurement and added 1/2 inch (for a seam allowance).  For the top stripe, I cut a piece of sheet that was 13 1/2 inches x the width of the sheet.  I simply ironed that piece in half horizontally, sewed raw edges together, and then turned it inside out...basically creating a giant tube.  I ironed it well (the iron is totally your best friend on this project) and then ironed a strip of Heat N' Bond to the top of the stripe.  This helped a TON when it came to attaching the stripes.  It held the stripes in place until I could secure them with my sewing machine.

Once all of the stripes were ironed, I decided on the placement of the stripes.  My stripes start 6 inches from the top and have 1 inch in between stripes.  I peeled the paper off the back of the Heat N' Bond and ironed it in place...being very careful to keep the stripes straight.  I used my acrylic ruler as I was ironing to keep everything lined up.

I ironed the top stripe on, the sewed it down on both the top and bottom of the stripe.  Follow the same steps for the second and third stripe.  Here's a closer view of the stripes:

Now that all of my stripes were sewed, I cut the curtain in half to make 2 panels.  It was SO much easier for me to cut them in half after the stripes were lined up...then I knew for sure that both of my panels would "match" when the curtains were pulled shut.

If you have thick enough sheets, you could hem up the edges and be done!  I decided to line these curtains to help give them more stability and hopefully give us another hour of sleep by blocking that pesky light!  I followed the awesome tutorial by Miss Mustard Seed found here.

Grayson's curtains are hung by ring clips because he's a 3 1/2 year old boy.  I had visions of him playing Spiderman and climbing the curtains...so ring clips it was.

This project took about 2 1/2 hours total and cost about  $35 (including the sheets and curtain rods...I already had the curtain lining and ring clips on hand).  Totally worth another hour of sleep in the morning and a few nap times a week!

In the interest of full disclosure, I had planned on hemming the curtains after they were hung and I had a chance to see how much they needed to be taken up.  They have been hanging up for a week and a half and that hasn't happened.  Seeing as 3 curtains are hiding behind furniture, I doubt it will happen anytime soon! :)

This was the first set of lined curtains I have made...if I can do it, you can do it!

If you Like it...

curtain help anyone?

I asked for your help with the large window in our dining area a few month ago.  I finally decided to add thick plantation-style blinds in the window, to give a little consistency as we have those in all of the windows in the front and sides of our house.

I love the blinds because they're functional (we're not blinded by the sun as we eat breakfast anymore) and they have really clean lines.  I'd still like to add some curtains to frame out the window a bit more.  Here's where you come in....

Being completely in love with the striped curtain trend, I'd love to make some for that window.  Here are a few pairs of curtains that I love:

My only question is what colors should I use??

Here is a little moodboard of the other large elements in our living and dining rooms.

Our living room and dining area is basically one huge open room with distinct areas.  I obviously like neutrals so I can use pops of color in pictures and accessories.  I'm really leaning towards the white and dark tan curtains like the fabulous Nester.   Of course these will be DIY and on the cheap...probably using sheets!

What do you think?  Would you stick with the neutrals or go for a bold color? Are you on board the striped curtain bandwagon or are they too trendy for your taste?

{inspiration} for Grayson's big boy room

My poor husband...I have the patience of a 5-year-old when it comes to a project.  Usually he just gets out of my way and let's me work, unless I need his help and then he gets roped into it!  Unfortunately for him, this weekend included one of those projects that required his help.

On on whim on Saturday, I decided we needed to take down Grayson's toddler bed and move the queen-sized bed from the guest room into his room...as in right then.  Luckily my husband was willing and able and we switched everything out without much trouble.  Grayson's room looks great, but isn't totally finished.  I need to add a few more things, change a few things around, and it'll be great.  Until then, I thought I'd leave you with some of the spaces that I have "pinned" for inspiration.
