DIY silhouette pendant

I know I'm not alone in my love for silhouettes!  In fact, it was on a "silhouette love" blog post that I stumbled upon these fantastic custom-made silhouette necklaces on Etsy.  However, the $90+ price tag was a little much for me...and I kind-of like to do things myself.  I get lots of compliments on my necklace and thought I'd share a quick tutorial so you can DIY your own!

This is a really simple and affordable project. Here are the items you'll need...

Blank pendant/locket - I chose to use a locket for mine so I didn't have to fuss with clear glaze and could change the silhouette out as I pleased.  I found my pendants at Michael's and Hobby Lobby for less than $5 each.  Use your coupons!
*Yes, my daughter's hair sticks up in a mohawk no matter what I do to it!  So sweet! *

A silhouette of your child printed out for the correct size of your pendant - I took pictures on my iPhone, emailed them to myself, and created my own silhouettes in Photoshop.  I then cut them out using my Silhouette Cameo and glued them onto white card stock.  My locket/pendant is double-sided, so I glued a silhouette on each side.

A length of chain - I purchased mine at Hobby Lobby...don't forget to use a coupon!

Simply insert your printed, trimmed silhouette, add the locket(s) to a chain, and add it to your chain!  You'll get lots of compliments...even more so when you say "I did it myself!"  These make great gifts for moms and grandmas, too!

laundry basket dresser...

I love Ana White and her fabulous blog!  I have had this laundry basket dresser pinned since the first time I saw it...which was probably before Pinterest was around! :)   The laundry basket dresser seemed so practical and an actual piece of "furniture" in the laundry room.  We started out with one of those fabric laundry sorters, which did it's job, but it was difficult to reach down into all of the fabric bags to get the laundry out.

So, when my parents were here visiting a few months ago, I asked my dad to build me my very own laundry basket dresser to fit the space perfectly.  He actually just looked at a picture and created his own version, but it's similar to the plans that Ana White shares.

My new laundry basket dresser has an open back, to let it "breathe" (according to my dad) and open sides. The dimensions are a little different in order to fit our space perfectly, but it still uses the Sterlite laundry baskets that the other dressers use.

I plan to find a galvanized bucket to sit on top to corral my cleaning supplies and to keep other stuff from piling up there!  I'm also going to add some type of labels to the laundry baskets to separate them - maybe some cute chalkboard labels??

Our laundry room has come a LONG way since we moved in nearly two years ago. Here's an updated look at our laundry room with the laundry basket dresser.  I'm in love!

Have you updated any room in your home lately with a little project?  A big thanks to my dad for helping me cross some projects off of my ever-growing "to do" list!

dresser "during"...

I showed you the amazingly ugly (but with good bones) "before" of our changing table/dresser for our baby girl's nursery a few weeks ago.  Here's a little refresher.

I picked up a sample jar of Annie Sloan's Chalk paint in Duck Egg Blue to see if I liked the color.  Ya'll, the hype about this paint is NO JOKE!  It was so easy to paint on, no odor, and covered like a dream.  Here's a close up of one of the more ugly corners of a drawer before it received a coat of paint:

Some sweet little child took a pen to it....and I didn't even realize until I edited the photo that it's a list of "People I Hate".  Ahh!  Poor TJ was the only soul on the list so far.

Here is that same corner after one quick swipe of Duck Egg blue.  Amazing!

That one tiny little 4 ounce sample pot was enough paint to cover almost the ENTIRE dresser with one coat of paint.  Can you believe it?  Here's a quick "during" shot of the dresser.

It will definitely need another coat of paint to evenly cover everything and a coat of wax, but I am amazed at the quality of this paint.  I'm on the lookout for other pieces of furniture that I can paint with chalk paint now...nothing is safe. :)

What have you painted with Annie Sloan Chalk Paint?

**By the way, Annie Sloan has NO idea who I am...just wanted to rave about this fabulous paint!  If Annie and her sweet people want to send me a box of chalk paint, I'd happily take it, but I bought this paint myself. :) **

another nursery project…

I feel like we have lots of unfinished projects floating around right now, but why not add another one to the list?   We scored this dresser, which will serve as a dresser/changing table, at a yard sale for $20!  It doesn’t look like much now but with a little paint and new hardware, it’ll look great!

photo(59)

I’ve been waiting to try my hand using Annie Sloan Chalk Paint and think this will be the perfect piece.  I picked up a sample pot of Duck Egg blue and LOVE the color!  Here are a few pictures that I’ve found on Pinterest to use as my inspiration…

This dresser is almost identical to the one that we purchased...even down to the hardware!  I wish that I could find replacement hardware to match the existing (unbroken) ones, but I'm not holding out hope on that one.

The drawers on our baby girl's dresser are lined with...wait for it...multi-colored cat print paper. I'm loving these drawers lined with old hymnal pages!

I will be sure to keep you posted on this, and all of the other unfinished projects we have for our sweet baby girl's nursery!

a date with spray paint…

My Craig’s List search turned up pure gold…a Jenny Lind crib (in good working condition) for only $15!  The lady who posted it was advertising her garage sale, but I quickly emailed her and offered $20 if she’d hold it for me.  She agreed and the crib was mine!  The crib definitely has some spray paint lurking in its future.

It has been sitting in the garage for a few weeks because it’s been SO UNBELIEVABLY HOT here in the Midwest.  Hot sun + spray paint + pregnant momma = not a good combination.  But, yesterday’s weather couldn’t have been better so I dragged the crib out to the driveway and hit it with some spray paint.

Those pesky little beautiful spindles require a LOT of paint, so I’ll be back to post the “after” pictures…

what I’m working on…

Our little guy is spending a few days in Texas with his grandparents, so I’m working on my “to do” list!

One thing is making over this desk…

desk

With the addition of a little girl to our family, there’s a bit of room-switching going on…which means that I’m losing my sewing room!  But I’m not worried, because with a little creativity and moving around, it’ll be great!  The desk (a Craig’s List find for $20!!) has had a little spray paint and caster remodel and is ready to serve as my new sewing desk. It’ll be paired with one of these to make a mobile sewing cart/center!

raskog

I really wanted the turquoise version, but Ikea was out of stock when my sister went on her shopping trip for me! Most of my fabric and other supplies are going to be housed in half of the walk-in closet in what’s now the guest room/nursery.

I’ll update in the next few days and give you some sneak peeks along the way!

looking for a father's day gift?

If you're looking for a sweet, sentimental, and QUICK Father's Day gift, check out our "Daddy's Shoes" Storyboard in our Etsy shop.

Would you like one for your husband for Father's Day? Visit our shop, 517 Creations on Etsy. This would also make a great birthday present.  If you supply the photos, I'll do the work in Photoshop and e-mail you a photo that's ready to upload to your favorite print shop! I'll even customize it to any size you'd like.

This particular print (pictured above) is sized to fit a 10 x 20 frame, so it can be printed at Sam's as a 16 x 20 for $5.95 and trim it down to size. A great Father's Day present for less than $20!

a year ago today...

One year ago today I published my most popular post (with over 60,000 page views),  my PBK Knock-off Ruler Growth Chart.  It's been fun to see this project pinned on Pinterest and re-created on other blogs.  I thought I'd re-post it today, with a little update to include some of the questions that I have been asked.

What kind of pen do you use to label the ruler?
We have found the Faber-Castell Pitt Artist Superfine Pen to work really well! It doesn't bleed and is permanent when dry.  Here's a link to find them online.
(http://www.joann.com/joann/catalog/productdetail.jsp?CATID=cat1125&PRODID=zprd_09653841a)  Whatever pen you choose, be sure to test it on the back of the ruler to be sure that it won't bleed or smear and ruin all of your hard work!

What did you use as a "clear coat"?
I usually use a Premium Enamel Spray in a Clear Gloss from Ace Hardware (Here's a link: http://www.acehardwareoutlet.com/ProductDetails.aspx?SKU=17007)  but any type of clear sealer should work!  The only thing I would caution is to be sure that your sealer won't cause your paint pen to run.  I use an acrylic paint pen (so it's water-based, not oil-based) and it works great, but I've heard that you should be cautious when using a sealer on top of a Sharpie or oil-based paint pen.

In fact, another reader (Jennifer W.) left this comment:
"I made the board this week. I tried using polyurethane (the kind you paint on) and it made the paint pen bleed/smear even after it dried for a whole day. I only went over about 5" of the board with it but I was able to wipe off and the ruined number and lines and redo them. Go the SPRAY route if you are sealing it!"

I love this idea, and it is now on my project "list", but I really love the alphabet posters on the wall! Where did you get them?
I found these flash cards at Michael's in the scrapbooking section. With a coupon, they only ended up being a little over $4! Amazon also sells these if you're interested! They are super cute, with relatively muted colors, and awesome animal facts on the back!

Given my "decorating ADD", I knew that I didn't want these to be a totally permanent fixture in the playroom, but I wanted them to stay put until it was time for me to take them down. :) I was looking for a different type of mounting strips, but came across these Reusable Tabs from Scotch. They are AWESOME! They are specifically for "lightweight mounting" but would be perfect for hanging posters, etc. AND you can reuse them! These ended up costing a little more than the cards (I think they were around $6), but that's a good price considering you can reuse them!

*****************
One sure way for our mailman to make my day is for him to leave a Pottery Barn, Pottery Barn Kids, or Ballard Designs catalog in our mailbox!  I love browsing through the catalogs, pouring over the pages, and circling items I’d love to buy if I had a million dollars.  But, let’s face it…I have Pottery Barn (and Ballard) taste on a Target budget!

To remedy this, I have started creating “knock offs” of some of my favorite items from the design catalogs.  One item that’s been in the Inspiration folder on my computer – doesn’t everyone have an Inspiration folder? – is the Pottery Barn Ruler Growth Chart.  Sadly, they don’t sell it anymore…but that didn’t stop me from creating a “knock off”.

YOU CAN NOW PURCHASE OUR RULER GROWTH CHART IN OUR SHOP!

This project ended up costing me a little under $7, because I had most of the supplies on hand.  The only thing I had to purchase was a 1 x 8 x 6 board from Lowe’s.

I stained the board with Walnut stain, giving it 2 coats and letting it dry in between coats.  I brushed the stain on with a paint brush and then wiped most of it off with a rag. I wanted a vintage, aged look, so I wasn’t too careful with making sure the coats were even.

After letting it dry for 4-6 hours (per the instructions on the can), I brought it in the house to tackle making this stained piece of wood look like a ruler.  I pulled out a pencil, a ballpoint pen, my acrylic ruler, and a paint pen.  This is where it gets a little tricky, but it’s worth it!

I marked off 1-inch marks along the entire length of the board.  In order to mimic the lines on a ruler, I made the “quarter” lines 2 inches long and the “eighth” lines 1 inch long.  Make sense?  I drew all the lines in pencil first, then went back and went over them with my paint pen.  This took a little while, but I did it while watching “The King’s Speech” with my hubs to help me pass the time! This picture gives you a better idea of how I did the lines...

One more thing – I started marking off  my “ruler” at 6 inches, because I wanted to be able to hang it on the wall. If you’d rather rest it on the floor, start marking at 1 inch. So, my 6 foot board ends up looking more like a 6 ½ foot “ruler”.

I wanted the numbers to look authentic, so I found a font that I liked (Century) and printed out the numbers 1-6 in 200 point font.  I rubbed a pencil on the back of the numbers, placed the numbers where I liked, and traced the numbers with my ballpoint pen.  This left a slight indention and pencil lines on the actual board.  I simply filled that outline in with my paint pen.  It requires a little bit of a steady hand, but you’ll get the hang of it!

After I created my “ruler”, I sprayed the entire board with a clear coat to protect my work.  This still allows me to measure my son’s height and mark on it, but gives it a finished look.

To hang it, I simply attached a sawtooth picture hanger to the back and hung it on a nail in our playroom.  It’s not very heavy, so it didn’t take much to hold it.  But, if you have a particularly rowdy crew, or want to hang it in a more high traffic area, you might consider attaching it a little more permanently to the wall.

Using a measuring tape, I made sure that the Ruler Growth Chart was hung on the wall at an accurate height.  This way Grayson can just stand in front of the ruler to measure his height, much like you’d do on a wall at your house.

guest bathroom reveal…finally!

February’s 12 in 12 project is finally complete and ready for it’s big reveal.   Let’s take a quick look at what this bathroom looked like in October 2011 when we first laid eyes on it next to a picture of the “remodeled” look from October 2011.  We removed the header above the tub, the spindly half wall next to the sink, and the crazy wooden “box light” above the sink, and painted the vanity and storage cabinet white.  Along with removing ALL.OF.THE.WALLPAPER and painting it, the bathroom looked a lot nicer but was still a little plain.

guest bath Here is the after!

I painted the space with Benjamin Moore’s Bird’s Egg, which I love.  It’s a fresh blue without being baby blue.  It definitely opened up the space and make it look larger.

guest bath hooks and art

The letter hooks were moved down a bit to allow Grayson to hang up his own towels.  Moving the hooks also opened up a space to add this fabulous bathroom art by Paper Llamas.

These prints were in my original inspiration post.  Erin of Paper Llamas contacted me about sending me a few prints to try out for myself and also a few for YOU!  Look for a giveaway soon!

guest bath shelves

After selling our cabinet, we had some space for shelving.  I originally thought I would put some floating shelves here but stumbled upon some unfinished brackets at Lowes.  With some help from my handy husband, we made 3 shelves that were a perfect fit for our space for less than $40.  The shelves still need a little work in the decorating department, but that will come soon.

Don’t you love what a little paint can do to brighten up a room?  Have you refreshed a room in your house with a fresh coat of paint lately?

a pink and green custom order…

I wanted to pop in and show you this adorable green and pink ruffled car seat canopy that has just shipped!  The customer is having a girl and wanted a canopy that had a celery green and petal pink combination.  I love how it turned out!

decisions, decisions…

This morning has been devoted to paint swatches for my little bathroom redo and the stripes in our entryway.  Who knew it was so hard to find the perfect light blue color?  Here are the swatches I have taped on the bathroom wall right now…

 bathroom paint colors

And who knew how hard it was to take a picture in a smallish bathroom with no natural light?!  I’m leaning towards Benjamin Moore’s Bird Egg or Sherwin Wiliam’s Upward.  They both definitely look muted in this photo, so here are the swatches from the websites.

paint colors

As for the stripes in the entry, the walls are currently Monroe Bisque – which I love – so I’m going to paint (3 or 5) stripes that are a few shades lighter than that. The only problem is the Benjamin Moore doesn’t put “shades” on their paint cards, only complementary colors.  But, I think I’m liking the Monterey White that’s on the card with it.

Let’s take a vote…Bird’s Egg or Upward?  Leave me a comment with your vote!

a little change of plans…

My 12 in 12 project for February was to spruce up Grayson’s bathroom (which also serves as our guest bathroom) just a bit.  It turns out that the bathroom is going to get a coat of paint and some new shelves, too!

I have been wanting to paint the bathroom but thought I’d wait until later on in the year.  But, after seeing this awesome bathroom remodel on 320 Sycamore and totally falling in love with the look of the shelves over the toilet, I came up with a plan.  I listed the old bathroom cabinet on Craig’s List and decided that if it sold, I’d use the money to paint the bathroom and add new shelves.  The cabinet sold in less than 3 hours!

So, the wall that used to look like this:

guest_bathroom1

Now looks like this:

bathroom_renovation_during

And will hopefully  have shelves like this soon:

february-2012-master-bathroom-after-[8]

We are going to try our hand at building these shelves:

anas-shelves-2

I will also be buying some white frames for a few fabulous art prints that I received for the bathroom.  I can’t wait to share those and the giveaway that will go along with them!

I’m still searching for a good light blue paint color.  Do you have any suggestions?  Leave me a comment!

a sneak peek…

spray painted thrift store lamp

We have been blessed with  beautiful weather here in Missouri for the last two days, so I’ve been spray painting up a storm.  Here’s a sneak peek of the thrift store brass lamp that I showed you here.  Hopefully I’ll be able to finish it up and show you the finished product in the next few days!

How has the weather been where you live?  Snowy or flip flop-worthy?

i love stripes…

In order to add a little interest to our entry way, I am thinking of painting stripes on one wall.  The current paint color is Monroe Bisque by Benjamin Moore and I’d like to paint wide stripes in a color about 2 shades lighter than that.  Here is some inspiration from around the blogs.

The beautiful striped Reading Room at The Lettered Cottage

The look I'm going for, although a little more “tone on tone” stripes instead of the more bold ones above…

Great gallery wall on a striped wall…

Tips on painting crisp stripes, which I’m hoping will work on our textured walls.  It looks like her walls are textured, too, so I’m hopeful!
What are your thoughts on stripes?  Love ‘em or hate ‘em?

12 in 12...february's project

February's 12 in 12 project is spicing up our guest bathroom, which also serves as Grayson's bathroom.    Here is what it looks like in all it's tan, white, and striped glory...

The view from the hallway.

I love these letter hooks that I found on clearance at Hobby Lobby last year.

Not sure what happened to the hand towel...I'm guessing Grayson used it to dry off something (probably one of his little horses or "skateboard guys") he was washing in the sink.  Just keeping it real, folks!

This is definitely not going to be a remodel at all...we just need to add some pops of color and spice it up a little!  I'll be back tomorrow to share some of my ideas and inspiration!

Have you done a little "spicing up" in one of your rooms lately?  Pinned any great kid bathrooms that are still "guest friendly"?  Do share!

12 in 12...january's reveal!

My 12 in 12 project for January was to tackle the playroom and I'm excited to reveal the shelves that my husband and I built!

We used my inspiration shelves as a jumping off point and built these to fit the play room and fit our needs. The shelves are made out of 1 x 12 pine (be careful when you're buying wood because the wood doesn't actually measure 12 inches wide!) which we had cut to size at Lowe's and screwed together with wood screws.  We used cleats to hold the shelves in place, which are just 1x2s cut to size and screwed into the sides.  The shelves are then attached to the top of the cleat.

After all of the construction was complete, I sanded everything down and filled the knots, holes, and imperfections with wood fillers.  The edges were all caulked and then I painted 4, yes FOUR, coats of white semi-gloss paint.  I just used Valspar's white semi-gloss paint off of the shelf and loved it!

We attached 2 more 1x2s to the back of the shelf and screwed that into the studs to secure the book shelf to the wall.  It's not going anywhere!

I added the green baskets (from the Dollar Tree) that were on the previous shelves in the playroom, along with the new bins that I bought at IKEA.  I'd like to get 2 more of the white bins to put along the bottom shelf and 3 more green baskets to fill in the middle shelves.

I have a few more projects up my sleeve to "decorate" it a little more, including adding a few more frames to the wall for Grayson's art. The 4 frames are just leaning for now but will get hung back up in the near future.

I think that Scott and I did a pretty good job for it being the first piece of furniture we have built together!  If you have any questions about specifics on the book shelves, feel free to leave a comment!

I will be back tomorrow with February's 12 in 12 project!

Have you ever built a piece of furniture with your husband or by yourself?  What are your secrets?
